Islamic Domination and the NYC Ground Zero Mosque

ground zero firemen ground zero scene

Throughout the years we have shared information with pastors, ministers, and laypeople to help them fulfill God's call on their lives and individual ministries. One of those we've fed information and resources to in the pastis evangelist, Mario Murillo.

Though we had never met in person, Mario and I had been in touch occasionally over the past few years conversing about our mutual chagrinconcerning the popular yet apostate trend in evangelicalismcommonly known as the"feel good church."Some time ago Ialso had occasion to send Mario some research and PowerPoint slidesthat detailed the doctrines and practices of Islam to assist him in ministering in the highly concentrated Muslim area of Flint, Michigan, when he held a crusade there. Last week I finallyhad occasion to spend some time with Mario.

Acting Like Evil Is Normal

Righteous Living in a Desensitized Culture...

All of us have probably had the distasteful experience of overhearing someone cursing and using foul language. Sometimes, graffiti "artists" ply their illegal slogans and we're the victims as we try to hurry our children or grandchildren past some freshly spray-painted wall, park bench, or boxcar. If you venture out very often to a mall or shopping area, then you have likely been subjected to foul language and unseemly activity at some point. If you lived much of your life without Christ in the world (as I did) then chances are that you remember the days when all of those off-color words were a part of your personal vocabulary. Praise the Lord that when He saved me He also cleansed me and, by the convicting power of the Spirit of God, He strengthens me to resist letting fly with a string of expletives in the manner that I once did. I'm not applauding myself here but just crediting the Lord for changing me and for continuing to refine His work in me day in and day out.

Choosing Evolution Over The Bible

Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.
- I Corinthians 1:25

That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.
- I Corinthians 2:5

You may have seen the headline in assorted Christian news services this morning (April 13, 2010) that a prominent Reformed scholar, Professor Bruce Waltke, resigned his position last week at Reformed Theological Seminary

(Orlando) because of the turmoil surrounding his recently magnified belief in evolution. The video that led to Professor Waltke's resignation from RTS was released on March 24 as a part of a series called Science and the Sacred, facilitated through the Biologos Foundation*. Waltke is a world-renowned Old Testament scholar who worked on the translation committees for both the New American Standard and New International Version Bibles. He is also the past president of the Evangelical Theological Society.

On March 29th RTS Chancellor, Ric Cannada, requested that Waltke and Biologos remove the video from the Internet, which they did. At that time however, Waltke reaffirmed his stated pro-evolutionary views to the leadership at Biologos. RTS Chancellor Cannada weighed his options and then, in a gracious statement, said, "As I came to understand the situation better, I ultimately accepted Bruce's resignation believing it best for RTS and also best for Bruce"
(http://www.rts.edu/newsevents/newsdetails.aspx?news_id=1371). Though avoiding and downplaying the idea that Waltke was "forced out," as news accounts have reported, I believe there is little doubt that what Cannada and RTS are saying is that evolution has no place in an institution that truly champions the Bible. To this I say, "Praise the Lord!" My hat is off to the leaders at RTS who had the courage to appear to the world as Neanderthal-like in what appears to be (and what I surely hope is) their defense of the Bible.

It matters little if this was a reformed institution, one that is Wesleyan-leaning, or any assortment of other peripheral theologies. These days it's just a rarity that we hear of anyone's resignation/termination from a Christian institution of higher learning over issues such as evolution. Frankly, the case of Professor Waltke is just another instance of intellectualism being favored over the Word of God. I for one am grateful that some institution somewhere saw fit to resist following the growing throng of those bent on making Scripture conform to science - all the while claiming they are within the boundaries of real Christianity. The authority of the Word of God must never be made subject to the scientific but imperfect thoughts and theories of man. Christians who read and believe the Bible and its God know this. Those who only claim to be Christians and who trust man's abilities and intellect over the Scriptures do not. The question is, will we make unwavering stands for God's Word - even when the world ridicules and mocks? We're on eternally solid ground if we will. I Peter 1:25 instructs us that "...the word of the Lord endureth for ever" and Jesus said "Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away" (Luke 21:33). Now that's a solid place to set up camp!

More destructive stuff funded by the John Templeton Foundation

As I mentioned, Bruce Waltke made the remarks that caused this uproar during a workshop with the Biologos Foundation. Guess who funds them? The John Templeton Foundation(http://www.templeton.org). The Templeton Foundation has funded studies promoting open theism and evolution on numerous occasions. In fact, this appears to be one prime reason as to why they exist. When it comes to understanding the prominence that evolutionists and the proponents of open theism are enjoying inside the Church, one just has to follow the money. There is surely plenty of cash being provided to bolster these and other unbiblical causes today.

It is no secret what the agenda of the John Templeton Foundation is. The heading on their website's home page says it all: "Supporting Science - Investing in the Big Questions." Nowhere in the Foundation's mission statement (http://www.templeton.org/about_us) is God, the Bible or faith of any kind even mentioned. However, since the John Templeton Foundation regularly grants large sums to help synthesize science and religion, and since they sport the richest single grant/prize in the world (1,000,000 pounds sterling - more $$$ than the Nobel Prize), it has become a popular cash cow for many in the neo-evangelical, intellectual crowd. Those who claimed Christianity yet sought to downplay Scripture in favor of science had a powerful ally in the late Sir John Templeton. This support continues unabated with today's leadership of the John Templeton Foundation, which is led by the founder's son, Dr. John "Jack" Templeton, Jr. Sir John Templeton was intent on the merger of science and the Bible, with scientific intellectualism being the deciding barometer - not the Bible. How grateful I am that many Christian intellectuals have chosen to believe the Word of God first before science. However, this view isn't accepted well in academia because one must first believe the Bible to determine things this way. Truth be told, I fear far too many inside our theological institutions are secretly bowing down to the altar of what is accepted in worldly education and worshiping the idol of intellect. True, lifting the Bible up as the first and last determiner of truth doesn't win one six- and seven-figure grants. But is that what marks the success of the Christian educator? Call me backward, but I've always thought that our Christian allegiance must first be to the Scriptures and then secondarily to intellect, science, and the wisdom of man and that they must be made subject to the rigors of the Word of God. I guess I'm just too uneducated. Thank God.

Another Disturbing Note to Nazarenes

We have received many emails and calls thanking me for last weeks article, "The Seductive Poison of Apostasy." I am grateful for the encouragement and support. However, I more than anyone, wish the information shared in that article, and so many others I have written, was of a more positive nature. With that said, here are some related facts concerning today's report.

To the dismay of biblical Nazarenes, there are three prominent Nazarenes listed as team members on the Biologos Foundation website.

Darrell Falk - Biologos President - professor at Point Loma Nazarene College since 1988

Karl Giberson - Biologos Vice President - professor at Eastern Nazarene College since 1984

Lowell Hall - Biologos Book Club Director - professor at Eastern Nazarene College since 1967

* Biologos Foundation (http://biologos.org) Note that the "flash" page heading on their website features perhaps the best-known open theist in the world, Pastor Greg Boyd. There is also a piece there by Bruce Waltke titled, "Why Must the Church Accept Evolution?"

The Seductive Poison of Apostasy

A look at 180, a new book from the Nazarene Publishing House

What if your church or your denomination's official publishing house used denominational funds to print, publish and promote a book that extols the joys of rejecting biblical authority. That's right, rejecting the Word of God. This is exactly what many biblically sound Nazarenes are now experiencing.

The latest and perhaps one of the most visible signs of distress for Nazarenes is the release of a troubling new book through an arm of the Nazarene Publishing House. 180: The Stories of People Who Changed Their Lives By Changing Their Minds is a product of a Nazarene-funded entity called "The House Studio," which is listed under the covering of the Nazarene Publishing House in the 2010 General Board Reports of the Church of the Nazarene for the year 2009. (See: http://www.ncnnews.com/nphweb/html/ncn/article.jsp?id=10009016)

180 is a compilation of several authors, including Emergent leader and author, Leonard Sweet, Frederica Mathewes-Green (who, along with Sweet and Emergent godfather, Brian McLaren, contributed to the book The Church in the Emerging Culture: Five Perspectives), G.P (Graham) Taylor (author of Shadowmancer), and Baptist-bred biographer-turned-fiction-writer, Ace Collins. A few of the other contributing authors include Emergent youth speaker, Mark Oestreicher, Karen Spears Zacharias, Patricia Raybon (who has endorsed contemplative spirituality and favors Catholic mystics), Cameron Conant and Bob Buford, the founder of Leadership Network, (the suspected genesis point which spawned today's Emergent movement and its original leaders). Buford also served as the initial chairman of the Peter F. Drucker Foundation for Nonprofit Management, now known as "Leader to Leader Institute."

The promotion for the 180 book states: How does a fundamentalist become less conservative? What makes a person intent on marrying choose to remain celibate and enter the priesthood? How can a scientist give up believing in certainty? What makes an organ-playing pastor's wife hit the road with a band and her bass guitar?

These are all intriguing questions, sure to bring people into a fuller, more holy walk with Jesus, right?

Conant's chapter explains how he began his adult life as a conservative but when his wife left him he saw the "error" of his Republican ways. Mathewes-Green tells the story of how she migrated from the pro-choice position to become pro-life, which, of course, is actually a good thing. Taylor's part in the book was about how a dope smoking kid got straight - but like the majority of what 180 offers, there is no hint that God, His Son, His Spirit, or His Word had anything to do with the transformation.

Another contributor to 180 is self-described "professional adventurer" Melissa Jenks.

As a promotional sample of the book, Jenks' chapter was apparently sent to every Nazarene pastor in March, 2010, as a part of the quarterly "Nazarene Communicator." It was because of this mailing that a distressed Nazarene pastor called, making me aware of the book.

Jenks begins, "I used to believe that the Bible was true. Completely true-every single word. (In the words of theologians, inerrant.)

"I now believe that the Bible is true. Completely true-every single word.

"So what's changed? I no longer believe that in order to be absolutely true, the Bible has to be literally true. It doesn't have to mean that earth and life in it were created in seven days. It doesn't have to mean that Methuseleh lived 969 years. It doesn't have to mean that Joshua stopped the sun in the sky or that the streets of heaven are paved with actual gold."

Along with promoting feminism and the view that American Christians are a rather hopeless and self-centered lot, Jenks follows with the concept that one can be an evolutionist (like her) and a Christian, too; that beliefs are inconsequential to one's being identified as a "Christian"; and the conclusion that there are many people who reject the historic teaching of the Church but should be unquestionably accepted as real Christians.

Whether its called liberalism or Emergent, heretical or just plain goofy, these ideas are surely not within the bounds of authentic Christianity. In fact, as I stated in my March 19th e-update ("Where is the Leadership?"), notions like these more closely relate to the very lie that got us humans into this mess in the first place i.e., "Hath God Said?" (Genesis 3:1).

Then comes the book's most regretable chapter, authored by Nazarene university professor, Karl Giberson. It's called "Giving Up on Certainty," which is exactly what the author tells 180 readers he has done concerning the Scriptures. Giberson is one of the world's most noted proponents of the theory of "Open Theism,"* an evolutionist, and a professor at his alma mater, Eastern Nazarene College. (*Note that Open Theism hypothosizes that God does not know what the future holds.)

Giberson's chapter in 180 recounts a sad story simliar to that of liberal theologian, Marcus J. Borg. He retells how his experience in Bible college led him away from his previously held position of certainty that the Bible was true and gave him in return a profound intellectual uncertainty for the Word of God. Portraying textbook-like postmodernity, Giberson's contribution to 180 amounts to little more than a clear cut, egregious denial of the Bible. He claims to have made this change based on a series of events and teachings he received in college, including an old and baseless charge that assorted prophecies found in Scripture were actually fraudulent. I don't care how intellectual he may be or how many degrees he has, or how many doting peers he may have showering him with awards and prestigue. The question needs to be asked: What is this guy doing teaching in an allegedly evangelical school? How many more students will enter once-trusted Bible colleges only to have their minds twisted and their belief in God's Word shredded because someone who does not believe the Bible has been allowed to stand unquestioned before them as an authority?

In thinking of the Gibersons and Borgs and other assorted heretics that infest seminary classrooms all around us, I can't help but remember the compelling phrase Jesus used as He addressed the educated but empty hypocrites of His day. Just before calling them snakes, he said the converts of these false teachers become twice the child of Hell than their mentors (Matthew 23:15)! I think I know something of how Jesus was feeling about this topic but before I allow myself to go there and tell you what I really think, let me introduce a mother named Ann. She has experienced one of the worst nightmares imaginable for any Christian parent. Year after year, Ann trained her son up in the ways of God. When the time came she sent him off to Bible college only to find that some so-called "intellectuals," within the confines of what she thought was a solid theological institution, injected him with the seductive poison of apostasy, obliterating both her own life's work and her son's relationship with God.

Ann wrote me at www.ericbarger.com. She stated:

Thank you for your stand for truth and the defense of the Word of God which is now under attack through the emergent movement. This is being taught as the new post-modern "truth" at many so called "Christian" universities. I have a son who has been captured by this vain philosophy being taught at a Nazarene university. I am praying for his return to the truth of God's Word as he was trained up for 12 years at home and in school to affirm God's Word as absolute truth.  The university taught from a New Testament book written by Bart Erhman, a self-proclaimed agnostic and academic expert in textual criticism.  That class has derailed my son's faith.

I wrote back:

Thanks for writing Ann.I grieve when I hear reports like this. It is heart-wrenching. Hang in there and please let me know how it's going. Remember, you are not alone. There is a godly remnant inside the Nazarene Church who are fighting for your son and for other sons and daughters. Let me know if there is anything we can provide for you or do.

By the way, which Nazarene University did your son attend?

God bless you!

Eric
Ann responded:

Thank you for your response.  My son graduated 2008 from Point Loma Nazarene University and I have also have a daughter enrolled at PLNU finishing her junior year.  The university has invited emergent authors/speakers to mandatory chapels and is offering contemplative prayer retreats.

I have written the General S/P of the Nazarene organization (Jerry Porter) and also the University president in this regard.  The S/P sent me three documents put out by the Nazarenes concerning the emergent church which all clearly emphasized a strong biblical foundation and God's Word as truth.  However, the reality of these speakers in chapel and contemplative retreats are contrary to those documents. The University president has not responded.
Ann

The introduction to the 180 book states, "Even though we're not out to change your mind on anything, we hope to stretch it a little." Stretch it a little? But how? By relying on human stories to emotionally appeal to us that drugs and abortion are evil - but never relating what the Word of God states on the topics? Then worse, by casting doubt on the Word of God with the kind of conflicting, faith-breaking doubletalk found in 180? Call me old-fashioned, but I thought the mission of the Church was to produce materials and teaching that uphold the authentic Gospel of Jesus Christ. Can you imagine Peter, Paul or any of the other Apostles writing a chapter in 180? I think not. God is indeed in the mind-changing business - make that the renewing of the mind through His mighty Word (Romans 12:1-2, Psalm 119:11)! If we need anything today it is voices that refute false beliefs instead of endorsing them. Rather than question marks, we must add exclamation points to the emphatic teachings of the Bible!

Call me narrow-minded but I've had it up to my eyeballs with the progressive, supposedly intellectual tripe some so-called Christian educators are foisting on young minds while consistantly downplaying and discouraging systematic theology, expository preaching and sound doctrine. It has become a vogue part of allegedly "higher" Christian education today to constantly question and doubt biblical truths rather than uphold them - all in the name of "critical thinking." This isn't some sort of postmodern apologetics. Instead, it is nothing short of subversion and is the very veil with which those who are guided by the spirit of rebellion cloak themselves.

Rebellion is indeed the spirit of the age we live in and it is at work inside the Church. The apostle John exclaimed, "Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world" (I John 4:1). I am more convinced with each passing day that what we are battling is nothing short of the attempted complete destruction of the historic Church by some within the borders of our theological institutions and denominations. Just look to those formerly sound theological giants of the recent past, Harvard, Princeton and Yale. Have we forgotten that they were once home to the greatest defenders of biblical truth in the world? It is surely no stretch that one would have to spend considerable time and effort to find many authentic Bible believers within their walls today. We must wake up before their fate becomes ours.

Considering the fact that evolution and open theism are being accepted and heralded in Nazarene universities, and books like 180 are being printed and promoted by the official publishing arm of the Church of the Nazarene, make one wonder what is next. However, as most of you know, Emergent heresy is certainly not confirned to any one denomination. Concerned Christians should be watching, examining, challenging, and demanding accountability from those in leadership. Lest there be more heartbreak such as Ann's, and for the sake of the next generation, we can do no less. Ladies and gentlemen, TRUTH comes with a price and this is what contending for it looks like.

2009 And Beyond...

As 2009 draws to a close Melanie and I just wanted to thank you for praying for us, our family and our ministry during the past year. We treasure our longtime friends and supporters and are grateful as well for the many new relationships that God has given us in the past twelve months.

The year ahead is already affording us many opportunities and challenges. With God's direction and grace we'll walk through each door He sovereignly opens and take on any and every topic that He directs us to.

Above all, we'll be watching for every opportunity to fulfill our calling as expressed at the top of our website's home page - We exist to see the lost saved and the Church changed by the glory of God!

Prayer Needs...

Please pray for our family, in particular Melanie as she continues to care for the needs of her aging parents. She's also working each day in our ministry office. Both of us relish the tiresome but wonderful responsibility of being grandparents to four wonderful kiddos too.

Pray for me as I continue with ongoing writing projects and as I spend many hours weekly answering email questions and inquiries. Also pray for God's leading during the research and construction of several new seminar messages. This is an extremely rewarding yet sometimes very laborious process.

Pray for our ongoing financial needs. God faithfully supplies - but always uses human hands to do so.

Pray for open doors and invitations from local churches, groups, and conferences across the nation where the Lord would have me to minister.

And pray for the fruit of changed lives and souls won to the Lord Jesus through our preaching, newsletters, DVDs, books, website and one-on-one ministries.

Final Thoughts...

Like many of you, I have received numerous end-of-the-year donation requests from ministries and charities. I know there are many worthy causes to give to but if your heart is to see "the lost saved and the Church changed by the glory of God" then I surely suggest giving to Take A Stand! Ministries. We've been here for more than a quarter century giving biblically based answers and reasons for faith always pointing people towards the blood-stained cross of Jesus Christ.

As you consider where you might plant a gift here at year's end or where you might be led to give in 2010, we'd greatly appreciate your support as we follow the apologetics-based directive of I Peter 3:15.

...be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you...

Though the heretical bloggers may mock our mission and resort to mere name calling, I am certain many will agree with me that we must aggressively address the many issues effecting our culture today, not the least of which is the mounting theological and doctrinal confusion among professing Evangelicals. Though astounding numbers are now rejecting the historic and biblical faith for the false gospels of "Emergent," "Feel Good," and "Seeker-Sensitive" we'll continue to boldly remind anyone and everyone of the changeless truth that there is but one way, one Lord and one holy Word of God!

Thanks for your gift to make it happen. (Just click here to give safely and securely online.)

The time is now. The harvest is ripe. All ahead full in 2010!

God bless you!

Eric

PS... Another terrific way to support the ministry is to order some of our DVDs, CDs and Books. These valuable tools can be shared again and again and will continue to serve the Kingdom of God for many years to come.

Coming Peril in Defending the Faith: Part 3

Part 3 of 3

MUSLIMS SEEK TO MUZZLE OPPOSITION

Much has been said concerning the passage and signing of the new “hate crimes” law. Readers here probably already understand that this new law adds no teeth to shutting down crime but is instead designed to shut down opposition and stifle debate concerning not just homosexuality but also false religious systems. The Hate Crimes law, passed as a part of the 2010 Defense Authorization bill, is just one more hurdle for Christians to jump if we intend to truly carry out the scriptural mandate to reach the lost and warn them of the godless eternity ahead for all who reject Jesus Christ. The real hate crime occurs when we shrink back from adequately sounding the fire alarm concerning sin and worthless religions.

If you think the newly enacted hate crimes bill is an affront to free speech and unconstitutional (which I believe it will be found to be), then you need to understand that there is an influential movement within the United Nations that has attempted to muzzle all vocal opposition to Islam every year since 1999. Though couched as a generic “defamation of religion” resolution, make no mistake this move, sponsored yearly by the Organization of Islamic Conference, is all about silencing the critics of Islam. If such a resolution is ever adopted as “binding,” it would probably be enforced through an international police-like watchdog agency and could realistically bring a halt to legally conducting Christian apologetics as we know it. Referred to as a “global blasphemy law,” dozens of human rights and free speech advocates have denounced the adopting of such a law which this year received its highest number of votes, inching closer toward passage at the UN. Remarkably, even Secretary of State Hillary Clinton blasted the UN’s adoption of the yearly non-binding resolution as an encroachment on individual liberty, saying, “An individual’s ability to practice his or her religion has no bearing on others’ freedom of speech.” (Source Here) It may be a completely foreign concept but can you say “Way to go, Hillary”?

Coming Peril in Defending the Faith: Part 2

Part 2 of 3

THIS BOLOGNA IS NOTHING NEW

Sixteen years ago I wrote, “The stated goal of the New World Order is to establish a global government. To do this, the redistribution of the wealth of the United States is mandatory. The New World Order simply cannot happen if we remain financially strong.” I also stated that the public’s perception of any pending global catastrophe - whether real or imaginary - would promptly be pounced upon as a tool to cede sovereignty from sovereign nations and into the grip of the global elite. That same year (1993) I recorded the video “The New World Order and the Environment… or How to Rule the World Through Fear.” (See here) What I observed nearly two decades ago is materializing right before our eyes today. Even conservative pundits (such as Rush Limbaugh, heretofore a naysayer concerning the encroachment of globalism) are now sounding daily alarms concerning this very thing.

Though admittedly there is a biblical case to be made for thoughtful custodial care of the earth, the current global warming frenzy is simply an extension of fanaticism from the recent past. Whether it was global warming, planetary extinction from alleged ozone depletion or the assurance that the earth was about to enter the next ice age, all of these like-minded movements fingered mankind as the culprit. They also all lacked one thing as well. Though leftists have succeeded in pushing the various environmental nightmare scenarios as absolute fact (using every medium from school curriculum to motion pictures), they have yet to achieve scientific consensus to validate their assertions. Even though the mainstream media has done their best to ignore them, and their peers have denigrated and ostracized them, the scientists and climatologists who've not walked the party line have thankfully managed to fuel and grow a burgeoning opposition movement.

Coming Peril in Defending the Faith: Part 1

The proposed Climate Treaty and the UN’s “Defamation of Religions” resolution plus Apostate “Christians” all threaten to cripple and even criminalize the work of God…

Part 1 of 3

By Eric Barger

Updated December 10, 2009

It is no secret that the ability of believers to present the authentic Christian faith is under attack on many fronts today. However, the free speech and liberty American Christians have long enjoyed to evangelize, give a biblical defense of the faith (apologetics) and to expose false beliefs (polemics) could very possibly soon be hampered as never before since the founding of the republic 200+ years ago.

There are two proposed international treaties being promoted at this time which could, for differing reasons, greatly reduce the Church’s ability to carry out “The Great Commission” found in Matthew 28:19-20. Concerned Christians should take serious note that one of the treaties I’ll discuss here could conceivably curtail or even criminalize the making of public declarations such as “Jesus is the only way.” One doesn’t have to look far to find nations where Christianity cannot be practiced openly today. Plus, in a world increasingly hostile toward the Gospel message, it is also easy to imagine how our politically correct society might welcome the implementation of such policies. These two situations are particularly egregious and deserve our serious attention - and our prayers - for I believe that these treaties are a foretaste of what life might be like at some point in the future under the Antichrist.

Preaching the WHOLE Truth

Presenting the truth without compromise is not popular in many religious circles today. With a great volume of "feel good" and "happy" half-gospels being offered, those who buck the trend and offer messages laced with words such as "sin," "judgment," "holiness,"  "Satan," and "repentance" are commonly viewed as narrow, old-fashioned or even Neanderthal. Actually, the preaching of the whole, authentic Gospel, with all of its convicting themes, never has been "popular." What is different now than in times past is that yesterday's Evangelicals were primarily interested in winning and then building strong, righteous disciples. In our day, however, many have decided to market themselves in such a way as to engage in a sort of popularity contest. This is symptomatic of the last days. Doesn't it make sense that, if one is attempting to use marketing techniques like we're seeing now, sermons pertaining to righteousness and surrender - let alone sin and hell - wouldn't be considered? These themes are relics from a bygone era and are considered counterproductive to the prevailing wisdom churned out by today's gurus of church growth.

The Modern Church Growth Movement has literally formulated "another gospel" by dictating that the stated goal (growth) cannot be achieved unless these and other biblical themes are sufficiently toned down or simply eliminated. With the pressure to be "positive" - and to fill the seats - countless pastors are now caught in what is nothing less than a web of compromise. Over the past 20 years, many leaders have become at least somewhat aware that the world is growing increasingly hostile to Christianity. This, coupled with eschatological views that fail to recognize just where we are in time, seems to be the crux of why Evangelicals have steadily shifted to user-friendly themes instead of sound Gospel preaching. They said "the numbers are shrinking" and instead of holding steady with God's Word they fashioned a solution based on man's desires instead of God. With the approval of their peers, many pulpiteers have settled on what works instead of what is right. The rude awakening ahead is that, regardless of how much tinkering is done with presentations or how nicely packaged Christianity is made to be, the majority in the culture just isn't going to buy what even the best salesmen in the Church Growth business are selling. The world is gearing up for what will eventually become a full-blown rejection of biblical truths. To try to stave off this inevitable end, the "feel good" preachers will continue to drift further away from the Bible and eventually find themselves completely entwined in what is commonly referred to as "the kingdom of the cults." In the end, nothing is going to attract the world to our doors - nothing except a Holy Spirit-born reality that they are hopeless and destitute without the forgiveness and cleansing found only in the Savior.

One of my favorite quotes concerning this comes from a collection of essays known as The Old Cross and the New by the prolific 20th century Christian writer, A.W. Tozer. He stated, "We who preach the gospel must not think of ourselves as public relations agents sent to establish good will between Christ and the world.

"We must not imagine ourselves commissioned to make Christ acceptable to big business, the press, the world of sports or modern education. We are not diplomats but prophets, and our message is not a compromise but an ultimatum."

Count me in with Tozer - Amen!

So, if your pastor has fallen for the siren song of the incomplete, counterfeit "positive" gospel, pray fervently that he would have a holy encounter with the righteous God. If your pastor has avoided the enticing, compromised counterfeit and is holding onto the real, authentic gospel, pray that he would stay close to God, full of His Spirit, and remain strong in conviction and character. At a time when the world is demanding we offer up something less than the truth to gain their approval, may the people of God instead rally around the preachers of righteousness - regardless of how unpopular to some the message may be.

It is these things that our ministry tries to instill in the Christian leaders of today - and tomorrow. Thank you for your support and prayers to see this goal realized - one man, one woman, one church at a time.

How to Spot the Emergent Church

THE LIBERAL ROOTS OF THE EMERGENT CHURCH

Over a century ago spiritual liberalism swept through the once-sound mainline denominations, wreaking theological havoc on anyone in its path. Once solid and fundamentally based seminaries became infested with the liberal teachings of the so-called "German Enlightenment" and before long heretical intellectualism, which doubted the authority of the Bible, quickly spread to the leaders of the denominations, into the pulpits and finally to those in the pews.

Today, one doesn't have to look far to see the spiritual disrepair that liberalism has left the denominations in. Because of the longstanding apostasy of the spiritual liberals, untold millions have already entered eternity without Jesus Christ - having previously believed that those entrusted with teaching them the Christian faith were doing so faithfully and authentically.

Using much the same modus operandi, Satan is now out to destroy the Evangelicals of our times. It worked well 100-150 years ago in the mainline denominations and it's working again now. So, with the predicted falling away of the end-times in full swing (2 Thess. 2:3), every truth-seeking Christian needs to be aware of the "new" liberalism - The Emergent Church.
